When a .LY domain expires, it is not immediately available for someone else to register. Its DNS may be suspended from about one day after expiry, and the domain then moves through registry-controlled stages if it is not recovered.
For the complete timeline and source notes, see the .LY domain lifecycle. Timings are approximate and the actual registry status controls what action is available.
What changes after expiry?
- Register.ly offers a normal renewal grace period of up to 5 days after expiry, subject to the domain status and successful processing.
- NIC.LY may remove the domain from the .LY DNS zone and apply
ServerHoldfrom about one day after expiry. Websites, email, and other DNS-dependent services may stop working. - If the domain remains unpaid or unrecovered, it may enter redemption about 45 days after expiry, followed by approximately 5 days of pending deletion.
- After deletion, the name may become available to another eligible applicant. The former registrant has no automatic priority.
What should I do?
- Sign in to the Register.ly Client Area and check the domain status, expiry date, and any renewal invoice.
- If renewal is offered, complete payment and confirm that the domain status and expiry date update.
- If normal renewal is unavailable, contact support immediately and ask which recovery option applies to the current registry status.
- Do not attempt a transfer as a workaround. An expired or suspended .LY must return to eligible active status before transfer.
Important timing note
- The published stages imply possible deletion roughly 80 days after expiry, but this is an estimate, not a guaranteed release date.
- Registry processing, eligibility checks, disputes, technical conditions, or policy action can change the timing for an individual domain.
