How to Pay with SEPA Direct Debit on Register.ly

SEPA Direct Debit lets an eligible customer authorize a payment from a supported bank account using an IBAN. On Register.ly, the option is intended for eligible invoices and orders billed in euros (EUR).

Important: SEPA Direct Debit is not an instant payment method. Processing can take several business days, and an invoice may show Payment Pending until the debit is confirmed. For an urgent domain registration or renewal, consider an available payment method with faster confirmation.

Who can use SEPA Direct Debit?

You may be able to use SEPA Direct Debit when:

  • Your Register.ly order or invoice is in EUR.
  • Stripe SEPA appears under Payment Method.
  • Your bank account is eligible for the SEPA Direct Debit scheme.
  • You are authorized to accept the debit mandate for that account.

SEPA availability depends on the bank account and the payment options shown for the transaction. It is not available for a USD invoice. An account can be eligible even when its local account currency is not EUR, but the direct debit itself is processed in EUR and the bank may apply conversion terms or charges.

Not every European IBAN is necessarily eligible. Your bank, account type, country, transaction, or Stripe eligibility checks can affect availability.

How to pay an invoice using SEPA

  1. Sign in to the Register.ly Client Area.
  2. Open Billing and select My Invoices.
  3. Open the unpaid EUR invoice you want to pay.
  4. Under Payment Method, select Stripe SEPA if it is displayed.
  5. Choose an eligible saved bank account or enter the requested account-holder and IBAN information in the secure Stripe form.
  6. Read the SEPA Direct Debit mandate and payment details carefully.
  7. Authorize the mandate and submit the payment.
  8. Return to the invoice and check its status.

Submitting the debit does not mean that the payment has settled. Do not submit a second payment while the invoice shows Payment Pending unless Register.ly support confirms that the first attempt failed.

How long does a SEPA payment take?

SEPA Direct Debit uses delayed confirmation. Processing normally takes several business days. Depending on the banking response and WHMCS processing, confirmation of success or failure can take up to 14 business days.

The invoice can remain Payment Pending during this period. Weekends, bank holidays, bank review, incorrect account details, insufficient funds, a canceled mandate, or another banking exception can add delay or cause failure.

Use the invoice status in Client Area as the current Register.ly record. A bank notification showing that a debit was submitted or is pending is not the same as a cleared Register.ly payment.

Can I use SEPA to register a .LY domain?

You can select Stripe SEPA for an eligible EUR order when the option is displayed. However, submitting a SEPA debit does not reserve an available domain or confirm registration.

A domain order remains subject to cleared payment, Register.ly acceptance, required verification, technical availability, and registry confirmation. Another eligible applicant may obtain an available name before a pending payment and registration are completed.

For a time-sensitive domain purchase, use an available payment method with faster confirmation.

Can I use SEPA for domain renewals?

An eligible renewal invoice must be in EUR for Stripe SEPA to appear. Because direct debit settlement is delayed, submit renewal payment well before the expiry date and allow additional time for bank processing.

A pending debit does not mean that the domain has been renewed. After payment clears, confirm the domain’s active status and new expiry date in Client Area or WHOIS.

Read the Register.ly Renewal and Expiration Policy and How Do I Renew My .LY Domain? before using a delayed payment method close to expiry.

Can SEPA payments be charged automatically?

SEPA Direct Debit can support stored bank accounts and recurring debits, but a one-time SEPA payment does not by itself prove that automatic payments are enabled for your Register.ly account.

Automatic collection requires:

  • An active SEPA mandate and an eligible saved bank account.
  • The bank account to be available as the applicable default payment method.
  • Automatic payments to be turned on in Client Area.
  • The invoice to be eligible for automatic payment.

Review Automatic Payments: How to Manage Payment Methods and continue checking invoice statuses. An automatic-payment setting does not guarantee that every debit or renewal will succeed.

What happens if my SEPA payment fails?

A debit can fail or be returned because of incorrect account information, insufficient funds, a closed or restricted account, a canceled mandate, a bank refusal, or another eligibility issue.

If the payment fails:

  1. Check the invoice status and your Register.ly account email.
  2. Review the non-sensitive failure message, if one is shown.
  3. Confirm the IBAN and account eligibility with your bank.
  4. Select another available payment method when the invoice remains unpaid and the deadline is close.
  5. Open a Register.ly support ticket if the status is unclear.

Do not include a complete IBAN, password, authentication code, or other confidential banking information in a support ticket.

How can I change my payment method?

Open the unpaid invoice and select another method currently displayed under Payment Method. Changing the account’s default payment method may not change a payment method already assigned to an existing invoice.

See What Payment Methods Does Register.ly Accept? and How to View, Download, and Pay an Invoice.

If a SEPA debit is already pending, check with Register.ly support before submitting another payment to avoid duplicate payment attempts.

Can I cancel or dispute a SEPA payment?

You can ask the organization holding the mandate or your bank to cancel a SEPA mandate. Canceling a mandate prevents future debit requests under that mandate; it does not automatically cancel an order, invoice, service, or debit that has already been processed.

Under the SEPA Core scheme, a customer can generally ask their bank for a refund of an authorized debit within eight weeks of the debit date. A claim for an unauthorized debit may be possible for up to 13 months. Your bank’s process and applicable law control the request.

Contact Register.ly before requesting a duplicate refund through both Register.ly and your bank. A returned or disputed payment can leave the related invoice unpaid and may affect a domain or service.

Is my bank information secure?

The Stripe SEPA flow submits sensitive bank information securely to Stripe. The WHMCS Stripe SEPA integration uses tokenization and does not store complete personal bank information in the local WHMCS installation.

Always use https://my.register.ly/, check the invoice and amount before authorization, and never send your complete IBAN or account credentials through email or a support ticket.

Frequently asked questions

Is SEPA Direct Debit available for all Register.ly customers?

No. It is available only when Stripe SEPA appears for an eligible EUR order or invoice and the bank account qualifies.

Can I pay a USD invoice using SEPA?

No. The Stripe SEPA gateway supports EUR invoices. Use one of the payment methods displayed for the USD invoice.

Is a credit card required?

No. SEPA Direct Debit uses an eligible bank account and IBAN instead of a card.

Can I pay using any European IBAN?

Not necessarily. The account must participate in the SEPA Direct Debit scheme and pass the bank, Stripe, and transaction eligibility checks.

How long does SEPA processing take?

Allow several business days. Confirmation can take up to 14 business days in the WHMCS Stripe SEPA workflow, so the invoice may remain Payment Pending during processing.

Why does my invoice show Payment Pending?

SEPA is asynchronous. Payment Pending means the debit was initiated but Register.ly has not yet received final confirmation. Do not assume that the invoice is paid or submit a duplicate payment.

Can I use SEPA for automatic renewals?

Only when an eligible saved bank account and active mandate are available, the correct method is selected, Automatic payments is on, and the invoice is eligible. Continue to verify each renewal and expiry date.

Can I cancel or dispute a SEPA payment?

You can cancel a mandate through the mandate holder or your bank, and SEPA Core provides bank refund and dispute rights. Cancellation does not automatically cancel an existing Register.ly order, invoice, or service.

Can I switch from SEPA to a credit card?

Yes, when a card payment is displayed for the unpaid invoice. If a SEPA debit is already pending, contact support before paying again.

Is my bank account information securely processed?

Yes. Sensitive bank details are sent to Stripe through the secure payment flow and tokenized; the local WHMCS installation does not store complete personal bank information.
