If you have no access to a .LY registrant email, first identify whether the problem is your Register.ly account login, the email mailbox itself or an incorrect address recorded for the domain. These are different problems and require different recovery steps.
Do not create a second transfer order or send an EPP/Auth code, password or identity document in an unsecured message.
Identify which email is affected
| Email or access type | What it controls |
|---|---|
| Register.ly account email | Client Area sign-in, account notices and password recovery. |
| Domain registrant email | Identity/authority messages associated with the recorded domain holder. |
| Domain administrative email | May receive operational or transfer-related messages, depending on registry procedure. |
| Mailbox hosted on the domain | The email service itself; it can fail even when account and registry records are correct. |
The account email and domain registrant email may be different.
If you cannot sign in to Client Area
Use How to Reset Your Register.ly Client Area Password. Secure the email account used for password recovery before resetting the Register.ly password.
If you no longer control the account email, use the Register.ly contact page and state that account recovery is required. Do not open a new account and assume that it proves ownership of the existing domain.
If you can sign in but cannot access the registrant mailbox
- Open the domain in Client Area and review the recorded contact information.
- Confirm whether the address is correct but the mailbox is inaccessible, or whether the recorded address itself is outdated.
- Check whether you can recover the mailbox through its email provider.
- Do not replace the registrant with an unrelated person simply to receive a transfer message.
- Open a Register.ly support ticket and explain that you cannot access the recorded registrant email.
- Provide the domain name, account identifier and a non-sensitive description of the mismatch.
- Follow the secure identity or authority verification process supplied by Register.ly.
Register.ly may need evidence showing that you are the registrant or are authorized to act for the registrant before contact data or transfer credentials can be changed.
If you need an EPP/Auth code
NIC.LY states that an eligible transfer requires accurate registrant and administrative emails and an authorization code. It also provides a Key Retrieval option through NIC.LY WHOIS.
Key Retrieval does not solve an inaccessible recorded mailbox if the code or verification is sent there. In that case, complete Register.ly’s verified contact or ownership process before attempting the transfer again.
Treat an EPP/Auth code as a secret. Do not place it in screenshots, public tickets, analytics, browser code or shared documents.
Information to prepare
Register.ly may ask for information such as:
- The domain name and current registrar.
- The Register.ly account that manages the domain, if applicable.
- The current registrant name or organization.
- An explanation of why the recorded email is unavailable.
- Evidence that you are the registrant or are authorized to represent it.
- Relevant order, invoice or prior ticket references.
Wait for Register.ly to specify the accepted evidence and secure submission method. The exact requirements depend on the account, registrant type and circumstances.
After access is restored or the contact is corrected
- Confirm the registrant and administrative email addresses.
- Verify that both mailboxes can receive messages.
- Review the domain lock and status.
- Request a new EPP/Auth code only when you are ready to transfer.
- Complete any approval message promptly.
- Enable two-factor authentication and review account users.
Frequently asked questions
Can support send the EPP code to a different email?
Do not assume that it can be redirected without verification. Transfer credentials must be protected, and Register.ly may require proof of authority before changing the delivery path or recorded contact.
Is changing my account email enough?
Not necessarily. The Client Area account email and domain registrant email are separate records.
Can I update WHOIS before transferring?
Only use the approved contact-update process. A material registrant change may be treated as an ownership change and require additional authorization.
