What Happens to My Website and Email When My .LY Expires?

Your website and email may stop working soon after a .LY domain expires because the registry can stop publishing its DNS. This interruption does not by itself mean that your hosting files or existing mailbox data were deleted.

For the complete timeline and source notes, see the .LY domain lifecycle. Timings are approximate and the actual registry status controls what action is available.

Website impact

  • Visitors may not be able to resolve the domain to the hosting server.
  • The website can still exist on the server even though its .LY address does not open.
  • After recovery, DNS publication and caches may take time to update.
  • An active domain can also fail for unrelated DNS or hosting reasons, so verify the actual status.

Email impact

  • Senders may be unable to find the receiving mail servers when MX records no longer resolve.
  • New messages may be delayed, rejected, or bounced depending on the sending system.
  • Existing messages and mailboxes are governed by the separate email or hosting service.
  • Use an account contact email that does not depend on the expiring domain.

Recovery checklist

  • Renew or restore the domain through the correct process.
  • Confirm that the registry hold has been removed and the domain is active.
  • Verify nameservers and important A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, and TXT records.
  • Test the website and send email in both directions.
  • Check the hosting or email service separately if problems continue.
