Renewal, restoration, and re-registration are different actions. The correct one depends on whether the existing .LY registration is active, expired, in redemption, pending deletion, or already deleted.
For the complete timeline and source notes, see the .LY domain lifecycle. Timings are approximate and the actual registry status controls what action is available.
Renewal
- Renewal extends the existing registration before expiry or during an available registrar renewal window.
- Register.ly’s normal post-expiry grace is up to 5 days, subject to status and successful processing.
- A generated invoice or payment alone is not confirmation; verify the new expiry date.
Restoration
- Restoration is the registry recovery process used when the domain is in
redemptionPeriod. - It can require additional fees, verification, processing, and registry approval.
- The registrar may request restoration, but success is not guaranteed.
- Transfer remains unavailable until the domain returns to eligible active status.
Re-registration
- Re-registration is a new registration after the old registration has been deleted and the name is released.
- It does not preserve the former registrant’s rights, term, DNS, or connected services.
- The name must still be available, and the new applicant must meet current requirements.
- Another eligible applicant can register it first.
Which action should I choose?
- Use renewal while the current registration remains renewable.
- Ask support about restoration when WHOIS shows redemption.
- Do not treat pending delete as a normal recovery window.
- Use re-registration only after confirmed deletion and release.
