When Does an Expired .LY Domain Become Available?

An expired .LY domain becomes available only after the registry completes its lifecycle and deletes the previous registration. Expiry, a stopped website, or a WHOIS status change does not necessarily mean the name can be registered.

For the complete timeline and source notes, see the .LY domain lifecycle. Timings are approximate and the actual registry status controls what action is available.

Approximate .LY release sequence

  • DNS suspension may begin about one day after expiry.
  • The domain may enter redemptionPeriod around day 45 after expiry.
  • Redemption normally lasts about 30 days.
  • A pending-delete stage of about 5 days can follow.
  • The name may become available after deletion, subject to live availability and eligibility.

Can I reserve the domain before release?

  • No. A former registrant does not receive an automatic reservation after deletion, and a calculated date does not secure the name.
  • A backorder or monitoring service cannot guarantee registration. Another eligible applicant may register the domain first after release.

How should I check?

  • Use the Register.ly WHOIS lookup to review the current status.
  • Search availability only after the registry has released the name.
  • If you are the current registrant, request renewal or restoration instead of waiting for deletion.
